How frequently do you engage in learning new things, exploring new aspects, or encountering novelty in your life, work, experiences, and routines? How often do you encounter events that bring about a sense of newness or realization?
The rush in our life has not allowed us to contribute quality time to all the activities that come our way. It is often this or that! Managing your tasks, including professional and personal ones, is not as easy as it should be, as you are overwhelmed not only by these tasks but also by various distractions in your life. And therefore, I ask—what new thing have you learned today? Or yesterday, or the day before? It could be anything in terms of knowledge, experience, or any activity. But...it must be new and fresh!
Some of us are very rigid in learning and accepting new aspects, for we believe that if something is not worth learning or will not hold any value in professional and personal aspects, then it is not even profitable to be considered. For instance, learning a new language—let's say French—has no role in your professional and personal endeavors. So, should you learn it, or discard it, for it has no value or would never contribute to any of your aspirations? Could learning French even be considered as a value addition?
Let's tackle it with three different layouts:
Willingness to learn and accommodating new aspects
Not every word in the dictionary can be used in your sentence. On a similar note, not every aspect or thing that we learn will be put to use in our endeavors, be it professional or personal. Some are for the purpose of engaging yourself, while some are for the purpose of actually acquiring knowledge or learning the very aspect of it.
Imagine a life of an individual who keeps on learning something new, out of the box, out of their tangent of endeavors. Today, they might be learning a new language, for example, French. And tomorrow, they might jump to gather new details about automobiles. And someday, they might aspire to learn about Henry VIII and his six wives. Endless will to learn and espouse random knowledge.
Well... why not? After all, it keeps you engaged and you have nothing to lose but the inevitable time.
Accept the defeat of not knowing things
Unawareness of any aspect, not knowing things, and accepting the very idea of it allow an opening to the path of knowledge and its derivatives. We have to understand that omniscience—if that exists at all—is a curse. Because acquiring such a state will only invite purposelessness, and in turn, emptiness in your life.
Now that the impossibility of omniscience has been established, it is clear that not everyone has the knowledge of everything. Therefore, in order to know things, you must accept the defeat of not knowing things. For that is the only way where development would be achieved, and in return... you will be a step closer to omniscience.
Embracing new things to conquer the distractions and disinterest in life
What to do when you have nothing to do? Or, rather rephrasing it...what to do when you have nothing better to do?
We are beings with tasks, interests, and routines in our lives. Then again, dodging distractions and disinterest is never a cakewalk! It will catch up with you, and you will always be its prey. For that very reason, engaging in new activities or learning new skills could be a way to reduce distractions.
Well, we have identified the triad layouts. Now, what?
Should we just agree to all of it, or agree to disagree...about all of it.
At the time when you are ameliorating yourself, you have to have a certain set of learnings in you in order to attain the level where the criteria of the amelioration reside! Complex much?
Allow me to simplify it with some instances...
Instance 1. You have watched a historical fiction content, be it a movie or a web series. Now, despite the fact that it was fiction, the content was based on real-life events and the characters were developed from real people out there. Now, once the movie is over, where the historical figure portrayed is very powerful, you might want to browse the web and research them out... out of just mere curiosity! This curiosity, at a time, is nothing but a will to learn new information about something that might or might not be in line with your endeavors. But then, it's the knowledge that will not go in vain!
Instance 2. POV—Getting acquainted with new skills will always be part of your professional and personal world. It can be anything from learning a new tool to getting in touch with a new hobby. But to welcome any new skill, you have to accept the fact of not knowing it. Only then, you can attain the full power of it! Let's say...you are working as an analyst in the Telecom domain. Now, for some very good reason, you want to taste the flavor of the E-commerce domain. But for that, you will need some domain knowledge, even if the parent roles and responsibilities of an "analyst" will be approximately one and the same. Then again, for that matter, you will have to accept the fact of not being aware of the E-commerce domain, and bear with it by only learning it, so as to attain the full power of it.
Instance 3. POV—You are underwhelmed or overwhelmed with your work, be it personal or professional. In either of the case, you might see the importance of learning a new aspect. For say, you are swamped with some tasks that have a deadline of a week or a fortnight. If the tasks are in line with the deadline, then managing it might be doable. Otherwise, it might not. In either case, stress would be an element for you. And for that matter, learning a new skill in between that week or the fortnight could be an essential factor—for it will reduce your stress by taking your mind off...or it might help in your task some way, which in turn will reduce your stress.
Now, let's go with a scene where the tasks are minimal. You are driven by the lack of work, and might feel the need to address the distractions in your life. Getting hold of something new could be handy in such cases as well. It will not only allow you to be productive and incorporate confidence in you, but also diminish the scope of distraction and disinterest in your window.
At the end of the day, learning something or anything is important. Even if it doesn't fall within the triad of the scenarios illustrated above. Releasing oneself from their own comfort zone is critical to explore the newness in terms of anything. Then again, it's not unachievable!
That being the ultimate case...
Make some way for learning new skills. Make some excuse for learning new aspects. Make some time for learning new things and the new ways of life!
